The Louisiana native got his start not in the Windy City, but in Milwaukee, where he was raised. He earned a reputation as a reliable guitarist on Chicago's West side with Joe Little & his Heart Breakers during the mid-'50s, later changing his on-stage allegiance to harpist Billy Boy Arnold. Young recorded with Arnold for Prestige and Testament during the '60s and backed Jimmy Rogers for Chess in 1958.
After abortive attempts to inaugurate a solo career with Jiffy Records in Louisiana in 1955 and Chicago's Atomic-H label three years later, Young hit his stride in 1961 with the sizzling "Why Baby"/"Empty Arms" for Bobby Robinson's Fire label. Young gigged as Otis Rush's rhythm guitarist from 1960 to 1963 and cut a series of excellent Chicago blues 45s for a variety of firms: "I Want a Love," "Voo Doo Dust," and "Something's Wrong" for Webcor during the mid-'60s; "Something's Wrong" for Webcor in 1966; "Sweet Kisses" and "Henpecked" on Celtex and "Hard Times (Follow Me)" for USA (all 1967), and "Guitar Star" for Jacklyn in 1969. Young even guested on Bill "Hoss" Allen's groundbreaking 1966 syndicated R&B TV program The Beat in Dallas. Late-'60s session work included dates with Tyrone Davis and Jimmy Dawkins.

Delmark issued Young's solo album debut, Blues With a Touch of Soul, in 1971, but a pair of mid-'70s LPs for Ovation (1974's Chicken Heads and an eponymous set in 1976) showcased the guitarist's blues-soul synthesis far more effectively. Young's main local haunt during the '70s and early '80s was Wise Fools Pub, where he packed 'em in nightly (with Freddy King's brother, Benny Turner, on bass).
In 1986 Joe began work on a self-financed recording that would finally allow him to have complete artistic control. At this time he also discovered surgery was needed on a pinched nerve in his neck. Following the operation, complications arose that affected his ability to play guitar. As part of psychical therapy he continued to work on the album sporadically until Mighty Man was finally released in 1997. Unfortunately health problems continued to plague Mighty Joe and he passed away on March 25, 1999 in Chicago. He was 71.

Soporific album debut for the Chicago guitarist — only seven songs, many of them way too long (10:40 of "Somebody Loan Me a Dime" being the worst offender), that sport little of the excitement of Young's '60s 45s for a variety of local firms. Young doesn't sound like he was prepared for the opportunity, and the stiff two-piece horn section doesn't help either.

Not exactly the most incendiary outing that Chicago guitarist Mighty Joe Young has ever cut. This 1976 album was cut in France for Black & Blue with a handful of Chicago stalwarts, but the excitement that Young routinely summoned up back home is in short supply as he walks through "Sweet Home Chicago" and "Five Long Years." Young's own "Takes Money" and "Need a Friend" are a definite improvement on those shopworn standards, but with only seven lengthy selections ("Teasing the Blues" runs 10:27), there isn't a lot to choose from.

For much of the 1970s and '80s, guitarist Mighty Joe Young "owned" Chicago's cozy Wise Fools Pub — at least musically speaking. He was the club's top draw, but this live disc, caught at the late and still-lamented Wise Fools, finds him sticking to the tiredest of warhorses. "Stormy Monday," "Turning Point," "That's All Right," and "I Can't Quit You Baby" may have wowed the homefolks, but they don't hold up all that well when transferred to the digital format.

VIDEOS RORY GALLAGHER

helton l. t. mourahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15764196043743163228noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5878422925340486063.post-41764920367515585832009-08-01T08:22:00.000-07:002009-08-01T08:46:06.553-07:00J.B.LENOIR

Newcomers to his considerable legacy could be forgiven for questioning J.B. Their ten-minute appearance in the film is an acknowledged highlight and established Ten Years After a place in rock history.
From 1968 to 1975 constant touring, playing important musical events like The Newport Jazz Festival, The Miami Pop Festival, The 1970 Isle of Wight Festival, The Toronto Peace Festival and huge venues like The Albert Hall London, Madison Square Gardens, NY and The Budokan, Tokyo, exposed the band’s music to a global audience. It is estimated that they performed to in excess of 75,000 new fans a week. Almost four million people a year, not counting those who saw the band in the Woodstock film. Between 1967 and 1974, Ten Years After recorded and released ten multi-million selling albums.
Sadly, Alvin Lee decided to go solo in 1975 and the group ceased touring and recording. However, there has always been a demand for Ten Years After and, over the following twenty-plus years, there were to be three short-lived attempts at reformation and one new studio record, About Time. Each time, Alvin quit to return to his solo career.
Starting in 2001, to take advantage in the growing interest in legendary bands like Ten Years After, EMI and Decca Records in conjunction with Ric Lee, digitally re-mastered and re-released the whole Ten Years After back catalogue, most with bonus tracks, including a “find that had lain unnoticed – the 1970 live recording of the band at its peak at the Fillmore East in New York. Ric and Chick both approached Alvin with a view to touring to support the releases, but Alvin declined. It was a frustrating situation and once again it seemed that fans would be denied hearing the music played live.
A chance opportunity early in 2002 for the three founder members of Ten Years After - Leo Lyons (bass), Chick Churchill (keyboards) and Ric Lee (Drums) to work together gave them an insight into the intense, re-awakened interest in the band. By public request, the band is back together. With new member, sensational, twenty-seven year old guitarist/vocalist Joe Gooch, they are recreating the music, energy and excitement they’ve been known for over the past four decades.
Ten Years After plays most of their classics, but it is not an oldies band riding around on past successes. It has taken up the reins and is riding into the future. Joe Gooch is fully conversant with all of Ten Years After’s previous triumphs, but he has a distinct personality that breathes new life into the band’s performance and helps forge a new direction with this highly respected team of legendary musicians.
Ten Years After……Now, the band’s first studio album, was released in April 2004 in Europe and came out on July 18th 2005 in the USA and Canada on the Fuel 2000 label. Throughout 2004 the band toured Germany, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Switzerland, Scandinavia, France, Czech Republic and Canada. 2005 proved to be even busier with tours completed in Europe and concerts being finalized for 2006 in USA & Canada, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Dubai and many other territories.
August 2005 saw the release of TYA’s double live album “Roadworks” in Europe to great critical acclaim. The band toured Europe and the USA relentlessly during 05, 06, 07 and 08 but somehow managed to find time to record a bunch of new material. November 2008 will see the release of the latest studio album - “Evolution”. A long-awaited DVD is still in the pipeline and will be released in 2009.

FONTE: http://www.tenyearsafternow.com/ , [ Traduzir esta página ]

ALBÚNS RECOMENDADOS

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5356421672783702882" style="WIDTH: 200px; The triumvirate of Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker unleashed a dazzling blend of musical styles, played with unrivalled skill, energy and panache. The very name of their band seemed bold and uncompromising. Yet it was a legitimate choice. Cream was simply the best.
When the band was launched with a formal announcement by their manager Robert Stigwood, it was proudly proclaimed 'The first is last and the last is first, but the first, the second and the last are Cream. They will be called Cream...' It sounded egocentric. Certainly the new group brought together some of the most gifted musicians of the day. Although the band's roots lay in the traditions of jazz, blues and rock'n'roll, their energy and vision ensured Cream's music was new, fresh and individual. It wasn't long before they took the world by storm with a succession of highly distinctive hit records and block busting concerts that set new standards of excitement.
In age when rock music was exploding, Cream broke down musical barriers. Among their admirers was trumpeter Miles Davis, and it has been claimed that his celebrated switch to a jazz-rock policy with such albums as the ground influenced Bitches Brew breaking work of Cream. The British group also introduced the concept of the 'power trio', which laid the foundations for the entire heavy rock genre. Cream inspired and set standards for the countless young players who followed in their wake. Between them Clapton, Baker and Bruce helped re-define the arts of playing rock guitar, bass and drums. On a broader level, Cream also proved it was possible to retain musical ideals, while achieving huge commercial success. It was a pattern repeated in the future by such trios as The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Rush and The Police.
Yet Cream were never just a 'heavy rock group.' Their dynamic 'live' shows emphasised improvised solos and block buster instrumentals like 'Stepping' Out', Train Time' and 'Toad', but they also played with attention to dynamics and displayed a harmonic and rhythmic sophistication far in advance of their contemporaries. Developed their song writing skills with lyricist Pete Brown, Cream devised material that often combined poetry with cinematic imagery. Surreal tone poems and hook laden chart hits took their place alongside ballads, music hall ditties, rock tunes and down home blues. Cream took risks and experimented. Not every idea succeeded but they were never predictable. There was no great master plan to become pioneers of 'progressive rock.' As Ginger Baker cheerfully insists 'We were a pop group!'
Often thought controversial or avant garde at the time, Cream songs like 'I Feel Free,' 'White Room,' 'Strange Brew,' 'Politician' and their biggest hit 'Sunshine Of Your Love' are now revived on innumerable soundtracks and in TV ads. They can be heard in movies like True Lies, Uncommon Valour and Good Fellas and are used whenever directors wish to evoke nostalgia and the free wheeling spirit of the Sixties. In the summer of the year 2000 the haunting Bruce Brown song 'White Room' was being used to advertise Applemac computers in a major TV campaign, bringing the sound of Cream into the 21st century, During their meteoric career the group made just four best selling albums including their 1966 debut Fresh Cream, followed by Disraeli Gears (1967), Wheels Of Fire (1968) and Goodbye (1969). Virtually their entire recorded output was collected on the long over due 1997 CD box set Those Were The Days (Polydor), together with demos and alternative versions. Listeners, who heard these tracks, perhaps for the first time, were struck by the richness of the material as well as the spontaneity and intensity of the performances.
Cream's recordings seemed amazingly diverse, compared to the work of groups who tend to compress their music into set patterns according to the dictates of producers and record companies. This may well be the right way to proceed, given the meandering excesses of the Seventies Prog Rock generation.
But Cream was focused in its own way. They had their own well-defined sound, and the search for new angles, away from basic blues-rock fare was hardly surprising, given their art and music school backgrounds. The need to explore, to learn and keep an open mind was an important part of their training. A sense of humour and a taste for anarchy was also considered an asset in the Sixties. All these attitudes and influences took their place in formulating the music of Cream.
In the midst of the acclaim for their achievements, it's easy to forget that the so-called 'super group' was formed in humble circumstances with a minimum of publicity, investment and equipment. The 'sensation' they caused was largely confined to the cognoscenti, a few music critics and those eager fans that queued up in the rain to pay a few shillings to see the group play their first few gigs in London pubs and clubs. Despite the esteem in which Clapton, Baker and Bruce were held, when the fledgling group had the temerity to ask a promoter for an extra five pounds for a sold out gig, it was refused! When they wanted to record songs that weren't just recycled R&B standards, they were greeted with blank incomprehension and even hostility. Sometimes demo tapes were 'lost' and sessions sobotaged. "Cream was a success, despite the industry," recalls Jack Bruce. Cream changed the lives of each of its founder members. They were all three powerful yet intensely different characters. In many ways Ginger Baker was the driving force. He came up with the idea, got it together and brought the group to the attention of their manager, the impresario Robert Stigwood. Ginger was regarded as one of the finest rock and jazz drummers in Europe. He had established his name and achieved cult status while playing alongside Jack Bruce in the Graham Bond Organisation.
Within a few years of Cream's success, his status was transformed, and the hard hitting extrovert had become a legend and remains the epitome of the wild eyed rock drummer.
Jack Bruce, the band's singer, bass player and co-composer, found his wings with Cream after many years of struggle and hard work. In the aftermath of Cream's acceptance he was able to launch a busy solo career, leading his own groups and working with a vast range of musicians from Tony Williams to Frank Zappa. Eric Clapton devised the name Cream and was also a prime motivator in forming the group. After his previous experience with The Yardbirds and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Eric found that Cream gave him the chance to play with complete freedom and to experiment and develop a more mature guitar style. The tempestuous trio was something of a hot house and a highly competitive musical environment. The Cream experience wasn't always a happy one for Eric, but it was like a finishing school that honed his talents and paved the way for a tremendously successful solo career. He was and remains the finest blues guitarist of his generation, a warm and sensitive singer/songwriter and the creator of many of popular music's most moving and memorable themes from 'Layla' to 'Wonderful Tonight' and 'Tears In Heaven.' He has never forgotten his Cream years and songs like 'Badge,' 'Sunshine Of Your Love' and 'White Room' remain staples of his 'live' performances. In their heyday Cream were at the forefront of a huge music explosion that overlapped and followed on from The Beatles era. Together with The Who, the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Pink Floyd, Cream raised expectations to fever pitch and for many of its adherents, delivered the musical equivalent of an acid trip. The sheer intensity of Cream shows remained locked in the memories of eager audiences for years afterwards. Whether wowing hippies at the Fillmore, San Francisco or delighting fans at the Saville Theatre, London, Cream became Flower Power icons and an integral part of the whole Sixties' psychedelic experience.
With fame, money and success came problems. It was a heavy burden of responsibility for any band, to be expected to turn on their fans night after night on endless tours. Each member of Cream had his own ego and temperament. Eventually the strain took its toll and the band, which began as brothers, came to an end with abrupt finality after only three years at the top. There was a huge sense of disappointment and loss among fans when Cream broke up in December, 1968. When they completed their final recordings for their Goodbye album, played their farewell concerts in the States and at the Royal Albert Hall, London in November they left their fans in limbo. Yet this was probably their wisest move. The complete break ensured that Cream split at the top of their game. They are remembered today only for great shows, hit singles and ground breaking albums that left their public desperate for more. There was no attempt to drag out their career together, no legacy of failed albums or less than successful 'come back' tours, often the fate of bands who never gave up trying. In the light of subsequent developments, during which pop and rock has undergone huge, fundamental changes, it is unlikely that Cream could have survived and prospered into the 21st Century in its original form.
Pete Brown, the poet and singer who co-wrote many of Cream hit songs with Jack Bruce is frankly amazed that such a musicianly band was so acceptable. "Looking back now, it seems extraordinary it should have been such a success world wide. It was a case of being in the right place at the right time. Luckily they were all strong people and managed to motivate themselves. At first people thought they were going to be just a Chicago style blues band playing a few clubs. Indeed the whole operation was club orientated and based on percentages. The British music business has always been terribly blinkered. Very few people could see that Cream was going to make it in America and around the world."
Says Jack Bruce: "Cream showed that rock musicians could play. But that was a double-edged sword, because it became very unfashionable to be able to play didn't it? But Cream was a nice little trio. It certainly was an influence—on the whole future of rock music."

By the early 1940's Hooker had moved north to Detroit by way of Memphis and Cincinnati. Hooker found work as a janitor in the auto factories, and at night, like many other transplants from the rural Delta, he entertained friends and neighbors by playing at "house parties". He was "discovered" by record storeowner Elmer Barbee who took him to Bernard Besman, who was a producer, record distributor and owner of Sensation Records, Besman leased some of his early Hooker recordings to Modern Records. Among Hooker's first recordings in 1948, "Boogie Chillen" became a number one jukebox hit for Modern and his first million seller. This was soon followed by an even bigger hit with "I'm In The Mood" and other classic recordings including "Crawling Kingsnake" and "Hobo Blues." Another surge in his career took place with the release of more than 100 songs on Vee Jay Records during the 1950's and 1960's. When the young bohemian audiences of the 1960's "discovered" Hooker along with other blues originators, he and various he and others made a brief return to folk blues. Young British artist such as the Animals, John Mayall, and the Yardbirds introduced Hooker's sound to the new and eager audiences whose admiration and influence helped build Hooker to superstar status in the mid - 60's England. By 1970 he had moved to California and worked on several projects with rock musicians, notably Van Morrison and Canned Heat. Canned Heat modeled their sound after Hooker's boggie and collaborated with him on several albums and tours. During the late 1970's and much of the 1980's, Hooker toured the U.S. and Europe steadily but grew disenchanted with recording, through his appearance in the Blues Brothers movie resulted in a heightened profile. Then, in 1989, The Healer was released to critical acclaim and sales in excess of a million copies. Today the "The King Of The Boggie" is enjoying the most successful period of his extensive career. In the past ten years Hooker's influence has contributed to a booming interest in the blues and, notably, its acceptance by the music industry as a commercially viable entity. Hooker's career has been a series a highlights and special events since the release of The Healer. In addition to recording his on albums Mr. Lucky, Boom Boom, Chill Out, and Don't Look Back for Pointblank / Virgin, he contributed to recordings by B.B. King, Branford Marsalis, Van Morrison, and Big Head Todd and the Monsters and portrayed the title role in Pete Townshend's 1989 epic, The Iron Man. His influence on younger generations has been documented on television with features on Showtime and a special edition of the BBC's 'Late Show' as well as appearances on "The Tonight Show" and "Late Night With David Letterman" among many others. John Lee was invited to perform The Rolling Stones and guest Eric Clapton for their national television broadcast during The Stones' 1989 Steel Wheels tour. In 1990, many musical greats paid tribute to John Lee Hooker with a performance at Madison Square Garden. Joining him on some or all of these special occasions were artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Ry Cooder, Joe Cocker, Huey Newton, Carlos Santana, Robert Clay, Mick Fleetwood, Al Cooper, Johnny Winter, John Hammond, and the late Albert Collins and Willie Dixon. Honors continue, with recent inductions into Los Angeles' Rock Walk, The Bammies Walk Of Fame in San Francisco, and, in 1997, a star in the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. John Lee's style has always been unique, even among other performers of the real deep blues, few of whom remain with us today. While retaining that foundation he has simultaneously broken new ground musically and commercially. At the age of 80, John Lee Hooker received his third and fourth Grammy Awards, for Best Traditional Blues Recording (Don't Look Back) and for Best Pop Collaboration for the song "Don't Look Back" which Hooker recorded with his long time friend Van Morrison. This Friendship and others are celebrated on Hooker's newest Pointblank / Virgin album, The Best Of Friends. The album also celebrates a return, exactly 50 years later, to Hooker's first hit, Boogie Chillen and serves as a perfect bookend for Hooker's first fifty years in the business.

Fonte:http://www.johnleehooker.com/ [ Traduzir esta página]

ALBÚNS RECOMENDADOS

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5341446717068464626" style="WIDTH: 200px; On December 3, 1927, Columbia Records brought Blind Willie Johnson into the studio where he recorded six songs that became some of his most enduring recordings: a song about Samson and Delilah called "If I Had My Way," "Mother's Children Have a Hard Time" (often understood as "motherless children"), "It's Nobody's Fault but Mine," "Jesus Make up My Dying Bed," " I Know His Blood Can Make Me Whole," and Johnson's single most-acclaimed song, "Dark Was the Night -- Cold Was the Ground," which is about the crucifixion of Christ. But after this session, Johnson didn't return to the studio for an entire year. The second visit (which took place on December 5, 1928) found him accompanied by his wife, Angeline, who provided backing vocals. The two recorded four songs, including "I'm Gonna Run to the City of Refuge" and "Lord, I Just Can't Keep From Cryin'." Songs from these first two sessions were also issued on the Vocalion label. Several months later, Willie and Angeline Johnson met Elder Dave Ross and went with him to New Orleans where Blind Willie Johnson recorded ten songs for Columbia. Although Blind Willie Johnson was one of Columbia's best-selling race recording artists, he only recorded for them one more time -- in April 1930 -- after which he never heard from them again. Little chamada "So Tired", que fora gravada em 1928 por Gene Austin e Lonnie Johnson (o último sob o título "I'm So Tired of Livin' All Alone").
As A Brick do Jethro Tull, My Generation do The Who etc).
Dia 31 é a vez do Canecão ,no Rio em 31/05, onde vamos ouvir dentre outras Mr.Big/Presence of the Lord e "End of the line" dos Eagles.

LIVE AT ROSELAND BALLROOM

HIGH & MIGHTY

DÉJÀ VOODOO

DEEPEST END live in concert

LIVE..WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS vol.1

VIDEOS GOV'T MULE

helton l. t. mourahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15764196043743163228noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5878422925340486063.post-69365604137838289382009-05-01T09:32:00.000-07:002009-05-01T10:18:05.431-07:00
SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON

Em seguida as clássicas "Help Me" , e "Nine Below Zero".
Ele presentia a morte chegando.
Segundo Robbie Robertson, ex-vocalista do The Hawks (posteriormente The Band), Sonny cuspia sangue freqüentemente.

Fonte:http://www.nanton.com.br/sonnyboy/index_sonny.htm

ALBÚNS RECOMENDADOS

BLUES MASTERS

DELTA BLUES

DONT SEND ME NO FLOWERS

NINE BELOW ZERO

LIVE IN ENGLAND

THE REAL FOLK BLUES

VIDEOS SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON

helton l. t. mourahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15764196043743163228noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5878422925340486063.post-27745135003046757672009-04-27T07:33:00.000-07:002009-05-01T10:17:46.929-07:00DAVE HOLE

Featuring 11 powerful new recordings, "ROUGH DIAMOND" presents a satisfying blend of fresh Hole originals with arrangements of songs from other composers that Dave has long aspired to record. As a result, many who may have felt that previous Hole albums were targeted mainly to blues guitar lovers will find this collection surprisingly “listenable”. From the slow burning "Yours For A Song" to the white hot intensity of "White Trash Girl", Hole’s guitar is as astounding as ever and yet at no stage does it threaten to overwhelm – always serving to enhance the song itself. Not to say that there aren’t some guitar pyrotechnics here. There are times when that is exactly what is called for and Dave steps up to deliver the intensity and excitement for which he is justly renowned. As well as the aforementioned "Yours For A Song" and "White Trash Girl" highlights include the hard-driving "Rough Diamond Child", "I’ll Get To You" and "Vintage Wine" which features some scintillating slide guitar work. There’s plenty of rollicking blues with "Can’t Stop Loving You", "King Bee" and Robert Johnson’s "Rambling On My Mind", as well as a heart-stopping slow blues in the form of Elmore James’ "Something Inside Of Me". Perhaps most surprising is a cruising rendition of the standard "Since I Met You Baby". Throughout these performances, Dave gets powerful support from his talented side-men: Roy Daniel on bass, Ric Eastman on drums and Bob Patient on keyboards. After 8 previous releases and numerous world tours, Dave Hole is now widely regarded as one of the all-time slide guitar greats, with accolades from around the globe and a growing world-wide fan base. With his furious energy and amazing "over-the-top" style of playing, Dave Hole has carved his own place deep in the pantheon of slide guitar greats. His performances are drenched in waves of fret-melting guitar riffs that infuse the spirit of blues and rock slide legends such as Duane Allman, Johnny Winter and Elmore James. "Nothing interferes with Hole's searing guitar when he is in full flight," said Rolling Stone. Guitar World agreed, saying, "Hole produces solo upon blistering solo with slide work that is exhilaratingly relentless." Since his recording debut 16 years ago, Dave Hole's records and live performances have drawn raves from countless international publications, including Billboard, Spin, Guitar World, Downbeat and Guitar Player. Similarly, he's earned rapturous praise from the Associated Press and major US market dailys like the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times and Washington Post. Billboard wrote; "Slide guitar fanatics will have their brains blown out by this Australian fret-melter ... Remarkably inventive, technically unusual overhand slide work that separates him from the common pack ... prepare to hear your jaw hitting the floor." Having fallen in love with music as a child, Dave spent his teenage years learning how to play by listening to every blues recording he could find. In 1991, after playing the Australian club circuit for over twenty years, he self-produced SHORT FUSE BLUES (BCD 1001), an album intended purely for direct sale to his fans. On a whim he mailed a copy to Jas Obrecht, then editor of Guitar Player magazine. "Magnificent, staggering ... almost beyond belief," raved Obrecht, who then tipped off Alligator Records president Bruce Iglauer. Iglauer, encouraged by his staff's excitement on hearing the album, released it to a world-wide audience. Almost overnight, Dave Hole became an international phenomenon. Considering all the praise Hole has received over the last few years, it's hard to believe that he has been performing for more than three decades. Born in England in 1948, he moved with his family to Perth, Western Australia when he was a child. He fell for the blues early on, when he heard a friend's Muddy Waters record. He yearned to hear more, but due to Perth's remoteness it was difficult to get any blues records on a regular basis. It was even rarer for a blues artist to perform there in person, so Hole had to teach himself to play. At first, only Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix albums were easily available, but with persistence (a trait Dave Hole has in abundance) he got his hands on records by Blind Willie Johnson, Skip James, Blind Lemon Jefferson and many others. Robert Johnson, Elmore James, and Mississippi Fred McDowell were his main "teachers", as he listened to their records over and over again, absorbing all he could from these blues masters. Then, either by accident or by fate, Hole broke his little finger in a football game. The only way he could continue to play slide guitar without pain was to put the slide on his index finger and hang his hand over the top of the guitar neck. When his finger healed, Hole had got so used to the 'wrong' way of playing (and grown so fond of the tone he was getting), that he never turned back. Throughout the 1970's and 80's Hole was gigging non-stop around Perth and the country towns of Western Australia, leaving audiences spellbound wherever he went. In 1990 he self produced his debut album "Short Fuse Blues". In April 1991 an album review appeared in the American "Guitar Player" magazine, followed by a July 1991 feature story which launched Hole to stardom. "Magnificent, staggering, almost beyond belief. Utterly Blues approved. ... ferocious, fire-breathing slide ... What more could you ask?" wondered the influential publication. Then Alligator Records president Bruce Iglauer took a chance and signed the only non U.S. based artist in the label's 30-year history. The gamble more than paid off. American critics praised Hole all over the country, and new fans were exposed to him through radio play on more than 1000 stations. Rave reviews appeared in Guitar World, Guitar For The Practicing Musician, Billboard, Audio, Spin, The Chicago Tribune, The Denver Post and many other major publications, as well as on The Associated Press newswire. And it's not just the critics who have been paying attention. Metallica's Kirk Hammett has named Dave Hole as one of his favourite guitarists, saying, "His slide playing kills me." People everywhere have taken notice. When veteran rock and blues guitarist Gary Moore heard "SHORT FUSE BLUES", he was so impressed that he invited Dave to join him on two European tours, playing large stadiums and arenas and concluding with two memorable nights at London's Royal Albert Hall. Subsequent albums and tours of the U.S. and Europe have solidified his stature as one of the very best guitarists playing today, taking him from virtual obscurity all the way to international recognition and admiration. His explosive live show has won him critical acclaim wherever he has gone. He constantly fills venues to overflowing and then proceeds to lift the rafters off with blistering performances. He has performed at countless blues festivals around the world and show after show have ended with rapturous applause. Blues Revue noted, "If this guy played with any more feeling, he'd have to go on Prozac. Dave Hole is not only a superb guitarist with a distinctive sound, he performs heart-felt vocals with the depth and credibility of any blues headliner touring today ... hard driving rocking blues ... he is electricity incarnate!" Hole has headlined festivals in many countries including America, Germany, Denmark, Holland, France, Switzerland and Australia. His two appearances at the prestigious Leverkussen Blues Festival in Germany were televised nationally. Tours have also included performances in Brazil, Sweden, Norway, Russia, Austria, Italy, Spain, Belgium and the U.K. Hole's second album, THE PLUMBER (BCD 1002) was released in 1992. These have received airplay on thousands of radio stations across America, Europe and elsewhere. Playboy, Esquire, Billboard, Musician, New York Magazine, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Daily News and all the guitar publications ran features and reviews on these albums. "While many bottleneck players base their styles on a few patented patterns, Dave Hole sprays a steely fire all over the strings, navigating stratospheric leaps with the greatest of ease," wrote Guitar Player. "Hole has a molten tone that will harden into a hopeless tangle, then bust loose for some old-fashioned catharsis", said New York magazine, "He's a modernist mining a classic blues vein". "UNDER THE SPELL" won an Australian ARIA award. "THE LIVE ONE", capturing as it does the full-blooded power of his live performances, has proven extremely popular with Dave's legions of fans world-wide. Audiences around the globe have thrilled to Hole's astounding guitar virtuosity and heartfelt vocals and this release demonstrates why. For those who are already familiar with Dave Hole's work, his new album "ROUGH DIAMOND" represents an exciting new milestone in his recording career. For others there can be no better introduction to the blues and rock artistry of this unique talent.

fonte:http://www.davehole.com/ [ Traduzir esta página ]

ALBÚNS RECOMENDADOS

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5329456966633741954" style="WIDTH: 200px; His family migrated to Chicago in 1951, and Luther began soaking in the sounds of Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, and Robert Nighthawk. He was classmates with Muddy Waters' son and occasionally stopped in the Waters' house to watch the master rehearse. It wasn't until he was 18 already in Chicago for seven years that Luther began playing blues on a real guitar and jamming with his brother Ollie's band.By 1957, Allison had dropped out of school and formed a band called The Rolling Stones. Unhappy with the name, they became The Four Jivers, gigging all over the West Side of Chicago. Before long, Luther was jamming with the West Side's best, including Magic Sam, Otis Rush, and Freddie King, who encouraged Allison to sing. "That," said Allison, "was my school." When King began to tour nationally in the early 1960s, Allison took over King's band as well as his weekly gigs at Walton's Corner and became one of the hottest acts on the West Side. For five years, Allison honed his craft. He moved to California for a year and cut sides with fellow Chicagoans Shakey Jake Harris and Sunnyland Slim. He cut his first two songs as a leader on the now-classic Delmark anthology, Sweet Home Chicago, before releasing his first solo album (also on Delmark), Love Me Mama , a record of hard-hitting blues that spoke to the growing rock audience. But even before his debut album came out, Luther landed a headlining spot at the influential Ann Arbor Blues Festival in 1969, and went from relative unknown to major blues-rock attraction. "His guitar riffs seemed to defy the possible," raved John Fishel, the program director of the festival, who brought Allison back to perform at the following two festivals.Allison signed with Motown Records in 1972 as the label's only blues act. His three records for the Gordy subsidiary led to numerous concert dates and both national and international festival appearances, but domestically, interest in the blues was fading. After finding instant acceptance in Europe, he was convinced that Paris was the place to be. While he gained superstar status in Europe and released a dozen European records, his presence in the American music scene diminished. With the release of Soul Fixin' Man in 1994, Allison's first domestic album in 20 years, he announced his return. "Fever and chills performances," said Guitar Player, "ferocious solos combine the wisdom of a master storyteller with the elegance of B.B. King, the elasticity of Buddy Guy, and the big sting of Albert King." After three mammoth U.S. tours, America once again was paying attention to Luther Allison. Allison followed up with Blue Streak, and the praise and accolades poured in. "A sonic roar as soulful as his gospel-shout vocals," raved the Washington Post. "Luther Allison's latest is nothing short of a masterpiece by a master," reported Blues Revue. Continued touring brought Allison before raving fans around the world, as he brought his band from the San Francisco Blues Festival to New York's Central Park Summerstage, with all stops in between. With Reckless, Allison reached even greater heights. Guitar World said, "Reckless in the best sense of the word, dancing on a razor's edge, remaining just this side of out-of-control. Hard-driving, piercing West Side Chicago single-note leads with a soul base and a rock edge." Throughout it all, Allison delivered one show-stopping performance after another. His boundless energy and fierce guitar attack combined to make him a blues superstar who reached rock fans like no bluesmen since Freddie King and Albert Collins. When the news broke that Allison had been diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer in July of 1997, the blues world was shocked. When he died just four weeks later, they were devastated. Without a doubt, Luther Allison's death robbed music fans of one of the most exciting and popular blues performers ever. With Live In Chicago, Allison lives on, as he tears through the songs with the single-minded desire to give everything he has to his audience. While listening to the album, fans can immerse themselves in the explosive power of Luther Allison's music and experience the redemptive force of his legendary performances.

fonte:http://www.luther-allison.com/ [ Traduzir esta página ]

ALBÚNS RECOMENDADOS

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?
No ano seguinte, lança o diversificado Reptile, que tem desde blues clássico ("Got you on my mind"), baladas ("Believe in life"), faixas animadas ("Superman inside") e tristes ( "Son & Sylvia").
Em 2002, sai o duplo ao vivo One More Car, One More Rider sendo que a versão em DVD traz "Will It Go Round In Circles" como bônus.

ALBÚNS RECOMENDADOS

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5329187580571718530" style="WIDTH: 200px; The lady's no shrinking violet; her autobiography, Rage to Survive, describes her past (including numerous drug addictions) in sordid detail. But her personal problems have seldom affected her singing. James has hung in there from the age of R&B and doo wop in the mid-'50s through soul's late-'60s heyday and right up into the '90s and 2000s (where her 1994 disc Mystery Lady paid loving jazz-based tribute to one of her idols, Billie Holiday). James landed at Chicago's Chess Records in 1960, signing with their Argo subsidiary. Immediately, her recording career kicked into high gear; not only did a pair of duets with her then-boyfriend (Moonglows lead singer Harvey Fuqua) chart, her own sides (beginning with the tortured ballad "All I Could Do Was Cry") chased each other up the R&B lists as well. Leonard Chess viewed James as a classy ballad singer with pop crossover potential, backing her with lush violin orchestrations for 1961's luscious "At Last" and "Trust in Me." "Tell Mama" was a searing slice of upbeat Southern soul that contrasted markedly with another standout from the same sessions, the spine-chilling ballad "I'd Rather Go Blind." Despite the death of Leonard Chess, Etta James remained at the label into 1975, experimenting toward the end with a more rock-based approach.
